Have you ever had to travel for work?

I used to, and I always looked forward to a hotel room with a large bath. It meant I could indulge in a good, long, hot soak — especially as our apartment only had a shower. It was one of the upsides of travelling a lot…

… And yet there were downsides, too.

  1. I missed my husband and children.
  2. I always got fatter — thanks for nothing, hotel breakfast buffet bars
  3. And as each trip wore on, the productive work I got done on airplanes morphed into watching “Flight of the Conchords” in dazed exhaustion.

Around this time, I developed a ritual of listening to music as each flight made its descent.

One of my favourite songs was “Just Give Me A Reason” by Pink and Nate Reuss. I used to line it up on my in-flight entertainment system so that it reached its crescendo just as the wheels hit the runway. It helped give purpose to my stride as we disembarked and energised me as I headed into whatever sh*tshow, erm… I mean, delights of the trip lay ahead.
