How to Access ‘Fresh Start’ Energy All Year Round

Like new school shoes, the discomfort is temporary

When I lived in England, autumn leaves and morning mist marked the start of each school year. Play was finished for the summer, and it was time to wear shoes again, sharpen our pencils and get back to studying.

‘Fresh start’ energy felt strong during autumn.

Meanwhile, at that very same time, it is spring in Australia. We’ve got one last term to drag the kids through before we can sweatily slump across the finish line of the school year in the heat of December. Around this time, I see the springtime purple Jacarandas blooming and I know it’s time to map out my plan for the year ahead.

Despite no obvious anniversary around November (unless you count Halloween 👻), I actually implement my annual plan straightaway from 1 November — not 1 January. I do this for two key reasons:

  1. November represents the last solid month to get work and business-building projects underway before two months of summer chaos and festivities intrude.
  2. By the time January does roll around, I can leverage the real New Year energy to boost the plan I already have in place — while still making time to take the kids to the beach/skatepark/other hot places with lots of flies.
